For years, online dating has endured a stigma that suggests it’s only reserved for those who are unattractive, old or unlucky in love.

However, with nearly nine million people subscribed to online dating sites in the UK alone, and thousands of registered online dating websites to choose from, this stigma has passed its sell-by date.

Nonetheless, it is a common misconception that people who date online are unable to hold down a relationship in the ‘real world’. We now know this to not be true; nearly everyone knows someone who has dated online. And, with women and men working longer hours than ever before, lots of perfectly eligible people simply don't hvae time to date. Online dating is now accessible and easy for everyone – including celebrities.

True Blood star Deborah Ann Woll met her partner, actor EJ Scott, at Match.com. The actress (who plays sex-mad vampire Jessica in the HBO series) accredits their success to EJ being so honest about his disability (choroideremia – a degenerative condition which eventually causes loss of sight) on his online profile. Now, two and a half years later, they have spoken out about their meeting, with Deborah stating that after a string of failed attempts from other guys on the dating site eventually some “really nice people contact you and end up being the love of your life!”

Other celebrities who are rumoured to have logged on to online dating sites include Charlie Sheen, Matthew Perry, and Joan Rivers, while Jennifer Aniston is reported to have paid a six-figure sum to Kelleher International (a professional online match-making service) to help her find Mr Right. Who knew online dating could be so expensive, yet cool?
